After recent Apple market share gains, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has said the “tide has really turned. Apple actually gained about one point but now I think the tide has really turned back the other direction.”

Ballmer went on to say…”The economy is helpful. Paying an extra $500 for a computer in this environment — same piece of hardware — paying $500 more to get a logo on it? I think that’s a more challenging proposition for the average person than it used to be.”

Obviously PC sales have been hit by the hard economy, and of course Ballmer isn’t complementing people for paying $500 for the Apple logo, but then maybe people prefer Apple because of their design and software, maybe Ballmer hasn’t thought of that.

Ok, so it appears that HO has decided to take the stealthily stealthily approach just recently with their machines, we’re not too sure why but over the past few weeks we have found out the actually three HP Pavilion laptops have received upgrades while HP just keeps quiet about the whole deal.

The third HP pavilion laptop to receive an upgrade is the HP dv4t Pavilion and gets an LED backlit display, Moonlight White and Espresso Black colour options, a 500GB HDD, Blu-ray option, integrated WWAN for AT&T or Verizon, and optional NVIDIA GeForce G 105M graphics.

Other options are integrated HDTV and a 12 cell battery which no doubt will add to the cost, but the things that we can’t quite grasp is why HP hasn’t bothered to announce ths latest upgrade to the HP dv4T Pavilion laptop.

LG showed off the LG X120 laptop at CES and then went on to let everyone know all the details and specs of what the white and green LG X120 laptop sports inside, but has continually avoided commenting on just when the LG X120 laptop would actually be hitting store shelves.

However, now LG has stated that they will begin shipping the LG X120 laptop to Japanese users by the end of March, while Europe and 20 other countries will see the LG X120 with April.

No word on just what those 20 other countries will be or even if it will include the United States, and so far no word on price either.

Apparently an AT&T source that goes unnamed and who is high up has said that a new $99.00 3G Apple netbook will be push out by Apple sometime this summer. This will probably happen around the time when Apple release their new iPhone OS 3.0 and the new Apple netbook may well have iPhone OS 3.0 as its operating system.

The stated figure of $99.00 does sound dirt cheap for a machine coming from Apple, but no doubt it will attain that price via subsidy on possibly a 2 year agreement with the network supplier.

So if this reliable unnamed source can be believed and if they have got it right we should expect to see the Apple netbook arrive roughly about June.

Toshiba has introduced their new 12.1 inch Portege A600 laptop, weighing in at 1.46kg, the Toshiba Portege A600 laptop will be available in two colour options, Glossy Cosmin Black and Titanium Silver, and reflects to powerful mobile concept of the Toshiba Portege R600.

The ultra-portable Toshiba Portege A600 laptop has been developed by mobile professionals and brings ground-breaking tech advances to a wide audience of consumers and mobile professionals.

The new Toshiba Portege A600 is made of lightweight high quality components along with utilizing space-saving technologies like Toshiba’s High Density Mounting Technology process. The A600 is powered by an Intel Centrino 2 processor with 3GB RAM and 250GB HDD, WLAN, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and Ethernet with Intel AMT 4.0.

When Samsung announced their Samsung NC310 netbook they didn’t leave out much detail with probably the exception of just how much the Samsung NC310 will cost, but now that to has been rectified as Samsung push out several images, and the last remaining details.

So, although our American cousins will still have to wait a while to find out how much the Samsung NC310 netbook will cost when it goes over the pond, we in the UK will gain the NC310 for £3.99.

Furthermore the UK will see the Samsung NC310 netbook hit streets in May, so that pricing and release date all done and dusted, but for more images hit up the source below.

There isn’t a huge amount of info on this particular item but apparently HP is set to intro their new AMD based dv6z laptop with as the word says will carry a start price tag of only $599.99 and can also be reduced even further with a $30 coupon on launch.

Furthermore with the deal for the HP dv6z laptop you’ll receive a free HP DeskJet printer which comes via a mail in rebate. Colour wide the HP dv6z will be available in the usual Moonlight White and Espresso Black.

No other detail on any specs though but no doubt those specs will be leaked sooner or later and we’ll pass them on.

It looks as if Samsung is stepping up their netbook range as following on from the Samsung N110 and the Samsung N310 they are now pushing out the Samsung N120 netbook, which is a 10.1 inch netbook with enough screen bezel for a full 12.1 inch style keyboard.

The Samsung N120 nebooks also sports a six cell battery delivering up to 10.5 hours of computing time, a 1.3 megapixel camera, a 3-in-1 card reader, 3 USB ports, optional Bluetooth and a couple of decent speakers.

The premium offer on the Samsung N120 netbook comes with Intel Atom innards and runs Microsoft Windows XP operating system, and both the Samsung N110 and Samsung N120 hit Europe sometime in April but as yet no word on price tag.

Old Samsung is obviously not content with outing the Samsung N310 laptop as now they follow on by announcing the Samsung N110, Samsung N120, Samsung Q320 and the Samsung R522 laptops, that’s another hot 4 from Samsung.

The Samsung N110 is much of an unsurprising successor to the Samsung NC10 and the Samsung N120 is a more substantial premium offering with the N110 battery delivering 9.3 hours and the N120 battery delivering 10.5 hours.

The Samsung Q320 netbook is an incremental upgrade to the Samsung Q310 with a 13.4 inch 416:9 aspect LED backlit display, NVIDIA 105M graphics and a battery delivering a claimed 4.6 hours. The Samsung R522 is a 15.6 inch 16:9 HD display with 4 USB ports whereby one supplies power even if the R522 is turned off and another doubles up as an eSATA port. No word on any prices as yet though.

There appears to be some kind of problem with the 8.9 inch Acer Aspire One netbooks, whereby playing music at full level through the Acer Aspire One’s speakers seems to completely crash the hard drive. Apparently according to several reports on HardwareCult forum, this problem seems restricted to just the Acer Aspire One netbooks with a standard hard drive.

Acer Aspire One netbooks with SSDs are not effected, and it arises apparently when the right speaker causes enough vibration and magnetic interference to crash the hard drive which in turn leads to a bundle of errors.

The strangest thing is this problem was first discovered when an owner played U2’s “Hold Me, Trill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me,” at max volume and this particular song had proven to be adequate at reproducing the problem.

Asus has just pushed out another Eee PC, this time it is the Asus Eee PC 1002H which sports a mildly quicker chip. Other than the slightly newer CPU, the Asus Eee PC 1002H remains exactly the same as the Asus Eee PC 1002HA edition.

Spoec wise the Asus Eee PC 1002H offers up a 10 inch LED backlit WSVGA display, Intel Atom N280 processor, 1.3 megapixel camera, 1GB DDR2 RAM along with a 160GB hard drive, stereo speaker built in, multi-card reader, 3 USB 2.0 ports, audio in/out, VGA out, and a battery claiming 5 hours of usage.

A virtual no-name has shown up with a new ultra-portable machine which is tough enough to grab the attention, its from Maingear and is called the Maingear mX-L laptop, which will apparently arrive with a 13.3 inch LED backlit display and is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

We’ve heard that HP will probably offer a stripped down version of Windows 7 on their future laptops well now it appears that Samsung is joining the same game and offering Windows 7 on their future laptops but this apparently depends on just how much royalties Microsoft will be asking.

Kyu Uhm, Samsung’s Head of Worldwide Sales and marketing for the computing division, has apparently stated Samsung would like to include higher end versions of Windows 7 on their future range of netbooks.

White Patrick Pavel, Sammy’s European Product Manager apparently thinks the launch of Windows 7 would probably signal the end of Linux as an option on Samsung netbooks.

Not quite signed, sealed and delivered yet, but the word is out in the UK that Apple and Orange are nearing completion of negotiations to offer subsidised Apple MacBooks via Orange to customers who sign a 2 year mobile broadband contract.

Naturally, no matter how much we want it, the Apple MacBooks will not be offered for free like some laptop deals, however, the whispers are saying that the Apple MacBook will be offered as low as £369.

Initially there are no plans to switch the processor to one designed by Intel. However, the servers used to back-up the XO laptops, as they are known, will have Intel technology at their core.

Sony VAIO VGN-A690
CNET
June 24, 2008

The good:
Beautiful Sony aesthetics; bright, wide-screen, high-resolution display; full complement of features and connections; powerful performance, yet runs cool and quiet; excellent software and support.

The bad:
Big and heavy; no integrated TV tuner; lacks Bluetooth; media-card reader supports only Memory Stick. The bottom line: Though it relies heavily on its accessories, the Sony VAIO VGN-A690 successfully delivers TV, DVR, stereo, DVD player, and high-performance PC functions in one big laptop.

Fujitsu LifeBook N6210 CNET

CNET has reviewed Fujitsu LifeBook N6210 laptop.
Editors' rating:
7.2 (Out of 10) – Very good

One of its cons is the weight (9.7 pounds or 4.4 kg), making it very uncomfortable to carry. In the other hand, it is actually not ment to be a business laptop for every day carrying. It has 17'' screen and two 100GB hard drives. The battery lasts less than 2 hours. So, it's not a portable laptop, but rather a desktop replacement for home entertainment.
